Teen Boys in Crisis?
Netflix's #1 Show Adolescence has Parents Wondering

Sexism, Misogyny, Manosphere, & Incel rhetoric are all topics that are mentioned during the 4-episode-show, Adolescence, which is currently being streamed on Netflix. Many parents are feeling overwhelmed and wondering how to combat this type of ideology from impacting their sons.
Some parents are so worried about what to do that they are trying to avoid the whole situation by eliminating access to a phone and internet and therefore social media as well.
As a parent myself, I want to give my young kids the opportunity to let their brain grow and develop without the interference of screens, but the latest research says a children’s ban of phones and social media won’t fully work.
The comparison that is currently being made is looking at if smartphone use amongst children should be banned, like cigarette smoking? Or should we be looking at children’s smartphone use like driving a car, implementing socioecological safety features as well as individual education?
Do you ever feel overwhelmed about what decision to make regarding your kid’s cell phone & social media use? As a parent of 2 kids myself, I am concerned about this decision that I will have to make in the near future. Because of course, I want my kids to learn about technology but at the same time I don’t want them to experience poor mental health due to early social media use.
Seriously sometimes, parenting feels like a tightrope balancing act at 100 feet in the air!
Here’s what I tell myself: All kids will eventually experience unsupervised access to the internet, including mine, - How am I preparing my kids for that moment?
When I try to answer that question, I don’t lean towards a complete ban of cell phone and social media use. However, there is no clear-cut, easy to implement answer that the researchers have found. Researchers are suggesting a combination of age-appropriate education, legislated harm-reduction design of children’s apps, and focused attention to children’s rights. Basically, they’re saying parents can’t do it alone.
With that being said, check out why I believe having the sex talks on a regular basis can be a potential antidote to the “manosphere” world that many teen boys are gravitating towards.
Kathleen Hema, International Public Speaker
I’ve always enjoyed public speaking. It’s true! There’s an energy that I love to feel at the end of an in-person speaking engagement. It’s not to say that I don’t feel nervous just before going on-stage. But, that emotional high at the end of a presentation is something I LOVE experiencing.
Are you organizing a conference or professional development day? Do you want to offer your attendees an engaging yet off the beaten path session about a topic everybody wants to talk about but isn’t quite sure how?
Invite me to speak! I am open to opportunities both domestically as well as internationally but currently I am looking to build my portfolio of international speaking engagements. If you are organizing a conference outside of the United States no matter your budget, please reach out! This is an opportunity that can be mutually beneficial for both of us!
