It's This or Something Better šŸ’ŖšŸ½

Sending you love & motivation from one parent to another

It’s hard being a parent today.

I don’t have to list the reasons why it’s hard, you already know! Toss in trying to have the sex talk and it can feel super-overwhelming!

Many parents tell me that they are worried that they’ll give their kid the sex talk too soon and end up traumatizing them. Other parents tell me that they know they need to have the sex talk but they just want to make sure it’s actually the right time, so they’re going to wait maybe a little bit longer, in order to make sure there kid is really, really ready to hear the information.

Parents - you know your kid best!! Lean into that knowledge of being able to sense when they’re worried or concerned or scared. Tune in to them and listen because they’re tuning into you.

If you’re worried about giving your kid too much information during the sex talk - you can absolutely eliminate that worry.

If you’re worried that your kid will be disgusted after learning what sex is - I’ll be honest with you that 99% of kids are disgusted when they learn what sex is - and that’s OK!

As parents we know the world has bad actors. We know that our children are actively trying to learn everyday how to make sense of this world by observing and asking questions. Be the parent who is encouraging them to ask. Be the parent who is preparing to answer their questions in a medically-accurate and age-appropriate way. Be the parent who knows it’s this or something better.

I can bury my head in the mundane everyday parenting grind and say, ā€œI don’t need to learn how to explain sex to my kid or teach them how to use the internet because I’m going to just keep them away from all that stuff.ā€ But is this really it? Is this the goal of my parenting journey? Or can I do better?

I truly believe that everyday we wake up with the opportunity to do better. Be better parents to our kids. Be a better version of ourselves than yesterday. We can take a moment to listen when we normally just give advice. We can choose to tell our kids that we’re proud of them when they least expect it. We can eliminate the chaos and noise that comes from our phones by putting it away for an hour when our kids get home from school and tune in to them.

We are the adults. We don’t have to remain uncomfortable, unsure, and nervous about having the puberty talk, the masturbation talk, the sex talk, the online safety talk, or the porn talk.

We can actively choose something better.

Maybe that’s getting prepared by learning exactly what to say so you don’t end up giving too much information too soon? Maybe it’s learning what are the common talks to have during each age range and focusing on just those 2 to 3 talks for the time being.

My goal is to eliminate the stress associated with answering your kid’s sex questions. You don’t have to remain in state of anxiety and worry. ← It’s this or something better šŸ’ŖšŸ½
